Artvin Coruh University was founded on 17th May 2007 and has been undergoing some rapid developments and changes ever since. The present situation of the university in the year 2010 is summarized below.
The Campuses
Artvin Coruh University continues its educational, research and socio-cultural activities in two main campuses which are 3 km far from each other. The first one is Seyitler Campus and the other is the one in the city center.
The building in Seyitler Campus, which is 3 km. far from the city center, hosts President's Office, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Science and Letters and Graduate School of Natural Sciences. What is more, we plan to build a "Social and Cultural Center" which will include a cinema, seminar rooms, banks, a hairdresser, a cafeteria for students and the university staff,a medical center, a pharmacy in order to fulfill the requirements of the students and the staff. In additon to the "Social and Cultural Center", a "Sports Center" with a capacity of 900 audiences will be built in Seyitler Campus. To be more precise, the campus will include all the necessary facilities for the students once all the planned social and educational buildings are built.
The Campus in the city center which is near the River Coruh hosts Artvin Vocational School. We plan to build a "Cultural Convention Center" in this campus which will enable students to perform their educational activities in a place full of peace.
Other than these two main campuses, Artvin Coruh University Health College continues its educational activities in its own building in the city center. Arhavi Vocational School has a temporary building for now which is in the town Arhavi and Hopa Vocational School continues acting in Karadeniz Technical University Campus in Trabzon.
Education
We offer education in different academic units (vocational school, college, faculty and graduate school) in different levels such as associate, bachelor and graduate. An academic year consists of two semesters named Fall and Spring which are about 14 weeks long. The students in the vocational school, college, faculty or graduate school have to renew their registration with the supervision of their advisors at the beginning of each semester. The students have to attend the courses. To be more specific; the students who have not attended more than 20 % of the practical courses and 30 % of the theoretical courses cannot take the final exam at the end of the semester.
What is more, in Continuing Education Center which will open soon, there will be various courses that will help students develop their abilities and enlarge their knowledge. In order to introduce the university to newly-registered students and help them accomodate easily to their new environment, the departments and faculties organize orientation programs. Artvin Coruh University does not have summer school or preparatory class practices for now.
Health Services
Artvin Coruh University does not have a medical unit of its own for now; so, the students and the stuff use the health centers and the hospital in the city center. 90% of the medicine prices and all of the hospital expenses are paid by the university.
Nutrition and Housing Services
The university staff and the students can benefit from the cafeterias of the university for nutrition services. There are three kinds of dish offered in the cafeteria, which is cheap and of good quality.
In the city Artvin there are two dormitories which are funded by the Turkish government with a capacity of 200 mixed students and 120 female students. In addition to this, a dormitory with a capacity of 500 students is being built near Seyitler Campus. There are also private dormitories which are active in Artvin.
Computer and Internet Facilities
The University has an internet connection with a speed of 20 Gbit. All the departments connect the internet via the same centre. We have both wireless and funicular internet connection in the building. There are six computer labs in the building with a number of 160 computers for the students to connect the internet and get computer education. Artvin Coruh University has a "distance education class" with a capacity of 40 students,too.
Transportation
Transportation from the city centre is provided with dolmushes. They are permanent and the students are able access the places they want either directly or by transfer.
Scholarship Opportunities
The associations in Artvin provide scholarship opportunities to prosperous students with economic difficulties. Turkish Educational Organization also provides scholarships to students. In addition, the students have the opportunity to work in the part-time jobs at university to contribute to their financial budget. The places they work are varied such as; the president's office, international relations, some academic and administrative departments and health and sports complexes.
